As costs for food and homes are rising its hard for people to afford to get on the housing ladder, meaning that many more people are choosing to rent a home for long periods while they save up to buy one. But when its a rented home can you really make it your own space?
You don’t want to spend a fortune on expensive items to decorate a home that isn’t yours but living with someone elses style is not ideal. Many landlords are happy to let you redecorate to some degree as long as you check with them first. Instead of changing whole rooms why not think about buying a few key items that will have a big impact on the style of your home.
Try accessories such as rugs, bedding, cushions and blinds to add colour to your home that you can move when you move out. Web-blinds.com has a great range of affordable and stylish blinds that can transform any room - you measure and fit yourself making it really easy to remove when you want to move out and take your blind with you. Try a Wooden Venetian blind or a bright roller blind for great style mixed with practicality.

Shutters from our Knightsbridge range are made from stunning high-quality Western Red Cedar, widely acknowledged to be an excellent timber both technically and aesthetically.
Our Richmond Shutters are made from Yellow Poplar, a durable, high quality wood which shows the grain when stained yet gives a smooth finish when painted.
Ascot Shutters are made from a lightweight hardwood from the Parasol tree, which produces an attractive grain that shows through even when painted.
And last but by no means least our Hampton Shutters are made from low density fibreboard (LDF) and are durable but heavier than our traditional timber options. However, they are the most affordable route to Shutter style.

If you‘re looking for a stylish window dressing then why not consider Shutters - Hillarys has a range of Shutter styles - tier on tier, cafe style and full height all of which offer privacy and light control.
And if you do decide to Shutters who better to go to than the UK’s market leader in made-to-measure Shutters - something that Hillarys Blinds has achieved within just 18 months of launching the product.
“Shutters are doing for windows what plasma is doing for television,” says John Risman, chief executive of the Hillarys group. “Widely regarded as the ultimate in window dressings, the market for shutters has grown by 40 per cent in 2007 and we’re delighted that Hillarys has gained the largest share of that in such a short space of time.”
Mr Risman attributes this to the company’s unique ability to bring a quality product to a mass market with speed and affordability. “We believe that our scale and unique service proposition of measuring and fitting means that we can bring a top-end product to a wider audience all over the UK at a reasonable price - no other company has the ability to do that within the lead times that we offer.”
He also believes that shutters are viewed as an investment and an opportunity to provide a greater level of security. “Shutters offer an additional set of benefits to other window treatments,” adds Mr Risman. “People are seeing them as a fashionable way of increasing the value of their homes, something that is becoming more and more important if the housing market is due to get a little tougher”.
“The product has proved so popular that we’re launching a wider range which will include a choice of custom matched colours and shaped shutters to fit arched or awkward shaped windows.”

Hillarys Blinds has made it into the 2008 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records as the manufacturer of the world’s biggest vertical blind. The blind, measuring 20m wide and 8.3 metres high - 75 times the size of a normal vertical blind - was made to mark the official opening of the company’s new factory in Washington, Tyne & Wear in January 2003.
“Our record breaking attempt to create the world’s largest vertical blind was one approach to celebrate the launch in a really unusual way,” said David Burke, manufacturing director at Hillarys. “It was a feat of engineering to make a blind of these proportions and although it was a verified as a world record back in 2003, we’re delighted that it now not only appears in the latest edition of the Guinness Book of Records but actually on the flysheet.”
The blind was unveiled by Denise Welch, who is currently starring as Steph Haydock in Waterloo Road and was a former landlady of the Rover’s Return in Coronation Street.

New Verticals Collection
If you want a bit of pulling power in your home, you’ve got to get vertical… that’s the message from Sarah Quilliam, head of product design at Hillarys. She is of course talking about vertical blinds, the current bestseller at the UK’s leading supplier of blinds and shutters. And March sees the launch of a brand new collection, the highlight of which is a striking mix n’ match range that allows you to mix n’match the louvres to create your own bespoke blind. You can combine prints with plains or any number of co-ordinating or contrasting colourways within the selection.Other ranges in the collection include Shimmer, Retro and Textures. Prices start from £45 (50cm wide x 90cm drop) measured, made and fitted.
Sliding panels
Hillarys is adding sliding panel blinds to its product portfolio. A stunning modern alternative to curtains and blinds, a sliding panel will add an extra dash of contemporary style and function to windows. They’re an effective way of controlling the light and also work really well to screen off sections of a room to create a totally new space - with very little effort. The system is available in a wide range of beautiful fabrics to suit any style or taste from orange and aqua to charcoal, suede, a basket weave effect and a retro seventies style print.
